News of the World (1977)

A Night at the Opera by Queen — album cover art

A Night at the Opera (1975)

A heraldic crest floats on pure white: two golden lions, a phoenix with outstretched wings, a flaming crab and two fairies guarding a crowned letter Q. It looks like royalty, but every creature on it is a hidden horoscope. Freddie Mercury, art-college trained, drew the band's zodiac into a coat of arms.

Queen II by Queen — album cover art

Queen II (1974)

Four faces float out of pure black, arranged in a diamond, glaring into the lens with no expression at all. The pose came straight from Marlene Dietrich in a 1932 film, and the man who shot it, Mick Rock, would later see it reborn in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' video. Decades on, it became the subject of a bitter lawsuit.
