By the 2000s the sleeve had shrunk to a thumbnail in a music library, and designers responded by making artwork that read at 100 pixels: hard colour blocks, single icons, faces cropped to the eyes. It made the decade's covers instantly recognisable — which is precisely why cropping them to one detail is a fair fight.
