Jonathan Mannion (b. 1970, Cleveland, Ohio) is widely regarded as hip-hop's defining cover photographer. After moving to New York and assisting the legendary Richard Avedon, he got his break shooting Jay-Z's debut, Reasonable Doubt (1996) — a portrait so assured it announced a new visual language for rap.
In the decades since he has photographed hundreds of album covers for the genre's biggest names, from DMX and Lil Wayne to Aaliyah and Drake. His portraits treat rappers with cinematic gravity — monumental, styled and unafraid of the direct gaze — helping turn hip-hop artists into icons.
