Robert Fisher
The art director behind Nirvana's album covers
Robert Fisher was the art director at Geffen/DGC Records who translated Nirvana's raw ideas into finished album covers. Working closely with Kurt Cobain, he shaped the visual identity of the band's most important releases at the moment they became the biggest group in the world.
For Nevermind (1991) he art-directed Cobain's underwater-baby concept, hiring photographer Kirk Weddle to shoot the now-famous image. For In Utero (1993) he built the sleeve around Cobain's own anatomical-angel collage, and he handled MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) and other Nirvana packaging.
Fisher's Nirvana work favoured a single, uncomfortable image over band photography — an approach that suited a group suspicious of rock-star convention and helped make the covers as recognisable as the songs.

Signature style
