Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, was a plain, unglamorous room with one extraordinary asset: a custom Neve mixing console that gave records made there a huge, punchy sound. Nirvana recorded Nevermind at Sound City, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cut Damn the Torpedoes there — a legacy later chronicled in Dave Grohl's documentary about the studio.
